How many times have you heard the phrase "one day I'll do this..."? Or "one day I'll be that..."?
We've got a future world printed on our minds. We've placed expectations upon ourselves and our futures. We withhold our happiness and push through the moment we live in with the hope that one day we might arrive at that destination.
One day I'll have a perfect family...
One day I'll meet the love of my life...
One day I'll live in a mansion...
One day I'll be filthy rich...
One day I'll get a promotion...
One day I'll be able to leave this job...
One day I'll have the courage to travel...
One day I'll try out that new hobby...
One day I'll clean underneath the refrigerator...
One day I'll get off my ass and workout...
One day I'll apologize for what I said...
One day....
One day....
One day....
Here's a news flash, coming at you real hot:
One day will never fucking happen!
You'll never get to live in "one day". You'll never get to live in the future.
Do a little experiment for me: sit patiently for a minute, and when you arrive in the future, stand up. Wait until the future comes, and then stand up and say, "it's arrived"! Wait for it....wait for it....wait for it.....
How long has gone by? A minute? 15? An hour? A lifetime?
The future never arrives. One day will never be here.
The only thing we have in life is now. We have this exact moment we're living.
We have the experiences, the thoughts, the emotions, the decisions, and the reality of now. We have nothing more and we have nothing less.
Living for "one day" means you're living for a time that you'll never have. You're choosing to give up the happiness and moments all around you in hopes that you might one day have "one day".
What a shitty way to live life. What a waste of a moment. What a waste of a lifetime.
How long are you prepared to trade your current happiness for something that might never come? Will you be on your death bed wondering to yourself, "what happened to the one day I was supposed to...."?
Don't trade your happiness. Don't trade your presence. Don't trade the life you can live now for some future that might never come.
Decide to live for today. Decide to live like today is one day.
The next time you hear yourself or anybody around you say "one day" tell that idea to shut up. Whether out loud or in your head, banish that idea from the world. One day isn't going to come. All that you're given in life is this moment. You're given this time.
Don't trade some future that might never arrive for the happiness you can have right now. Don't wait for one day. Choose to live for today. Chose to make today your "one day".
My "one day" story happened on May 25th, 2020. It was Memorial Day Monday, and I was sitting around a fire up at mom's cabin. As we all went around bullshitting and trading stories, Ron brought up a story of one of the boats he's owned in his day. I was sitting there at the fire, half heartedly listening to him tell a story. And really, I was fantasizing about the boat I'd own one day.
I've always dreamed of water skiing more, and having my own boat.
The realization hit me like a ton of bricks. Why couldn't today be "one day"? I had no convincing answer and nothing to say to my wondering self other than "hmmmm".
Thirteen days later...
I'm not much of one to need "things" in life. But holy hell, I am one happy camper.
